Healthy Corner Store initiatives are a food access strategy that is gaining traction in Ontario and across Canada. This webinar explored both projects and policies that support corner stores in stocking more healthy products – especially fresh fruits and vegetables – from store layout redesigns to food retailer certification programs.


Health on the Shelf from Sustain Ontario’s SlideShare

For the first presentation, Phebe Gibson, policy analyst with ChangeLab Solutions, spoke about various healthy corner store initiatives from across the United States. Her presentation focused on the spectrum from program to policy – from learning about local food environments and piloting ideas (where most healthy corner store projects are currently) to implementing retailer policies that have a wider reach and, in the long term, require fewer resources. Phebe’s presentation also spoke to the elements of strong certification programs: defining scope, standards, incentives, and enforcement. ChangeLab Solutions has generated numerous toolkits on healthy food retail policies including: “Health on the Shelf,” “Providing Fresh Produce in Small Food Stores,” “Licensing for Lettuce,” and “Incentives for Change.” For those specifically interested in distribution challenges for smaller food retailers, check out ChangeLab Solution’s webinar, “Addressing Distribution Challenges.”


Healthy Corner Store, Toronto Model from Sustain Ontario’s SlideShare

Our second presenter, Catherine Mah, is Assistant Professor of Health Policy in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University and was part of Toronto Food Strategy’s healthy corner store pilot project. Her presentation spoke to food retail environments in Toronto and the research methods, pilot process, and evaluation components involved in TFS’s pilot project in Scarborough. Catherine also emphasized the need for an equity lens in projects that address changing food retail environments. The evaluation of this project is ongoing and the Toronto Food Strategy is looking at ways to support healthy corner store transitions citywide, so stay tuned for more resources.

The discussion and questions addressed strategies for supporting corner store managers and mitigating the risks they take on when implementing changes – suggested strategies include leveraging collective buying power or using a central procurement hub to access better prices for new products. The importance of partnerships was also emphasized; healthy corner store initiatives are about community changes and are just one piece in changing the food access landscape. Because changes are happening at multiple levels – from store environment and policy changes to shifts in individual/household dietary and shopping habits– multiple indicators and tracking tools must also be used in the evaluation of these programs.food environment symposium

We hope this webinar support municipalities, public health departments, and organizations working on healthy retail and feeds into the growing discussion across Canada. In fact, a Food Environments in Canada Symposium and Workshop is taking place May 21-23rd in Saskatoon and we encourage those interested in learning about the “distinct strengths and challenges of Canadian food environments research, and to strategize for how to move this research forward in the future.”
