Over the next 3 weeks, Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO)Association of Chicken Processors and Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission will be hosting a series of stakeholder consultations on allocating growth in Ontario’s chicken industry.

chicken-430x430CFO describes the catalyst for the consultations as such: “The Ontario chicken industry is well positioned to grow over the next few years as a result of both market fundamentals as well as the resolution of a national differential growth solution which will bring additional production to Ontario. This growth in the Ontario chicken industry will not only stimulate broad economic benefits for the province, it will positively contribute to the Government of Ontario’s stated objective of creating an additional 120,000 new jobs in the food and agricultural sector by 2020.”

According to the CFO, “growth in both established and emerging chicken markets” provides an opportunity for “exploring new ways to administer growth to both producers and processors.”

Sustain Ontario believes that there is a great opportunity to innovate within the supply managed system and open up the conversation between marketing boards and other stakeholders to find more options for certain markets that may be underserved, namely for pastured poultry and local/sustainable direct-marketed chicken. Reform could also create more room for new farmers to scale-up, or engage in diversified production. Read Sustain Ontario’s position on supply management, or visit the Flocking Options campaign FAQ for more information on the quota system for broilers. Please contact Carolyn Young at carolyn@sustainontario.ca if you’re planning on participating in the consultations to inform future discussions.

In-person consultations are being held for primary producers and downstream value chain partners. Dates and locations are listed below and on the CFO website. Contact consultations@ontariochicken.ca as soon as possible to ensure you receive an invitation for the meeting.

Written submissions can also be submitted online, including a survey available in both French and English. Visit the online comments page. At time of writing, no deadline has been stated for online comments.
