From Hastings, Northumberland, Prince Edward Local 334 & Slow Food the County:

In 2012, under the leadership of the late John Della Bosca, the National Farmers’ Union Local 334 and Slow Food the County jointly funded an award to help support innovative ideas by sustainable farmers.  Each organization committed to provide $1,000 that year for awards, loans or grants for worthy participants from Prince Edward, Hastings and Northumberland Counties, for a total of $ 2,000.

To be eligible, applicants must be farmers in one of the three Counties, committed to sustainable agriculture with a strong emphasis on agriculture that has minimum impact on the environment and features humane treatment of animals.  Those wishing to participate should submit applications (maximum 3 pages) including:

  • An outline of the project or initiative
  • The contribution to the goals of sustainable farming that the award would make.
  • The budget  and the amount requested by the applicant; including how much of the budget is being contributed by the applicant or by other sources such as a loan, a grant or some other form of aid in the form of a scholarship or bursary.
  • Performance criteria – what criteria will be used to determine if the contribution met the goals of the program
  • A commitment for a final report.

Applications are being accepted for the 2014 award up until the end of March.  Our motivation is to raise the bar with regard to food production and animal welfare, help maintain a good living for family farms and share experiences with the farming community.  A successful applicant should be prepared to share the experience, successful or otherwise with the farming community.  We are certainly prepared to work and help you in this regard, please feel free to contact us, (NFU) Elly Blanchard railwaycreek@gmail.com, or (Slow Food) Peter Fleming,pcfleming@yahoo.com.

Applications should be submitted to either Peter Fleming of Slow Food, the Slow Food website (info@slowfoodthecounty.ca) or Elly Blanchard of Local 344.
