The Walmart Foundation has announced that it is making $1.89 million CAD ($1.5 million USD) available to fund proposals from eligible non-profit organizations working to reduce food waste in Canada.

Requests between $300,000 and $1,000,000 (USD) will be considered. The deadline to apply is October 19, 2018.

“The work being accomplished by the outstanding recipients of the Walmart Foundation grants to date is inspiring, and we remain committed to being part of the solution on the important issue of food waste in Canada,” said Kathleen McLaughlin, chief sustainability officer, Walmart, Inc., and president of the Walmart Foundation. “Today’s announcement will build upon our efforts to help accelerate momentum to reduce and prevent food waste and alleviate hunger in Canada by investing in infrastructure to move excess perishable food from facilities and farms to the charitable meal system, funding innovative initiatives and advancing successful, existing programs.”

The Foundation is seeking proposals from qualified organizations that have experience in formulating, proposing, and implementing food waste reduction efforts.

Applications will be considered in three areas:
Prevention – Stopping waste from occurring in the first place
‣ Advance the adoption of measurement tools and/or develop innovative prevention solutions
Recovery – Redistributing food to people
‣ Test innovative approaches or scale proven models that advance the food recovery and distribution of perishable food
Recycling – Repurposing waste as energy, agriculture and other products
‣ Accelerate innovations and programs that improve organic recycling
