York Region Food Network has some exciting events coming up! Learn about the Network and what initiatives they are involved in! All information has been taken from the YRFN’s website.

What is the York Region Food Network?

York Region Food Network  (YRFN) is a centre that promotes food security – a healthy, accessible and sustainable food system in York Region. In support of this vision, this network works hard to raise public awareness on many issues affecting food security such as affordable housing, adequate employment, education, accessible childcare and social assistance policies through programming, outreach and advocacy initiatives.

The YRFN started in 1986 as a multi- agency organized to coordinate food drives and act as a liaison between food banks and agencies within the York Region in regards to food access programs.

Over the years they have expanded, raised public awareness around food security issues and have been involved in several community initiatives. In 1990, the York Region Food Network promoted school snack programs and assisted 14 schools to set up! In 1993, they had their first community garden project in Markham and since then additional community gardens have started in Newmarket and Aurora. They also publish a bi-annual newsletter and continue to track stats on food drive collection totals and food bank use. Be sure to keep your eye out for YRFN events and this great newsletter!
