Grocery Story is a book about retail consumer food co-ops across the US and Canada. It’s currently in the developing process and a Kick starter campaign has been launched to help fund it. If successful, it will be published by New Society Publishers. The author, Jon Steinman, discusses how the food cooperative model is the best way to achieve widespread and systemic changes to local food culture and local economies. This book shares the stories of many successful food co-ops and contains Steinman’s experiences to date in the good food movement. It also draws upon his work as a journalist reporting on food systems through the producing and hosting of Deconstructing Diner and his 10 years on the board of directors of his community owned grocery store- the Kootenay Co-op.  Below is more information and a video directly from the Kick starter.

The Project

Across the USA and Canada, communities are realizing that the most effective way to respond to the handful of grocery giants controlling the food supply is to become a co-owner in their neighborhood grocery stores.

This campaign will support the development and writing of the book Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants.
