Community food hubs are increasingly being employed by sustainability advocates as a model for coordinating the supply of food from groups of local producers to consumers. As well as reducing food miles and providing new economic opportunities, food hubs can also be used to promote connections between consumers and proximate rural productive spaces.

Through this research we hope to explore how these connections are built, but also the challenges which they create for the groups of community activists responsible for their management. We take as a case study a pioneering new community food hub called Stroudco.

Where: Oakham House, 63 Gould Street in the Oakham Lounge (2nd Floor)

Food for Talk presents:
Towards Sustainable Food: An Introduction to the BRASS Research Centre and the work of the BRASS Food Group with Alex Franklin and Julie Newton (Cardiff University)

http://www.ryerson.ca/maps/

Background and Purpose of Seminar:
Community food hubs are increasingly being employed by sustainability advocates as a model for coordinating the supply of food from groups of local producers to consumers. As well as reducing food miles and providing new economic opportunities, food hubs can also be used to promote connections between consumers and proximate rural productive spaces.

Through this research we hope to explore how these connections are built, but also the challenges which they create for the groups of community activists responsible for their management. We take as a case study a pioneering new community food hub called Stroudco.

As well as giving an overview of the current work of the BRASS Food Group, Franklin and Newton will use this presentation as an opportunity to invite feedback on a research project which seeks to investigate the potential role of community food hubs in creating resilient and cohesive communities.

About BRASS and its Research:

The ESRC Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) is an ESRC funded research centre combining expertise from Cardiff University’s Business School, School of City and Regional Planning, and Law School.

‘Towards Sustainable Food’ is one of the core research themes of BRASS. It includes work on issues of accountability and foodgovernance; food procurement and sustainability; waste; the climate change impacts of food production and consumption; biosecurity and animal health; and ways to achieve more sustainable, accountable and socially responsible systems of food supply. Most recently, the Brass Food Group has been awarded the contract to develop the new Food and Drink Strategy for Wales.

————————————————-

‘Food for Talk’ provides a place for conversations to take place between people who work with communities, government and universities to explore the emerging and challenging issues around food security, agricultural transformation, and local foodalternatives/networks. This series is jointly sponsored by the University of Toronto Department of Geography, York University Faculty of Environmental Studies, the Ryerson Centre for Studies in Food Security, and the Toronto Food Policy Council.
