Food by ward launch-May 3, 2016

Only a few weeks until May 3 Launch of Food by Ward at Toronto City Hall.  Food Champions across the City’s 44 Wards are mobilizing others from the food system to showcase Toronto’s food assets and opportunities and to call for greater attention to food as integral element of urban existence.

See the Food Champion Toolkit for helpful guides for taking action.  You can support the Food by Ward initiative by reaching out to community agencies, food networks and your City Councillor.  Share the Food by Ward resources with them and invite them to attend the May 3 launch.

Food by Ward which has engaged over 200 Food Champions, created Ward Food Resource Maps that show food assets and opportunities available in each of the City’s Wards.  The maps list community food initiatives like farmers’ markets, healthy food retailers, student nutrition programs, food assistance programs such as food banks, and community gardens.  The assets are shown in comparison to averages across the City.

An April 14 article published on Torontoist.com examines the unequal distribution of food assets across Toronto and suggests how the Food by Ward initiative can help to address food inequality and access in Toronto.
