Conference Celebrating Food and Farming Comes to Sudbury

Cross-sectoral conference to “dig deeper” into sustainable food systems issues, celebrate with Feast of Local Flavours

 BFH2015 Registration Open horizontal

This fall, Sudbury will be buzzing with sustainable, healthy food and farming advocates, innovators, and decision-makers gathering for Bring Food Home: Digging Deeper, based at the Sudbury Radisson Hotel on November 20-22, 2015. Sustain Ontario is pleased to announce that Early Bird conference registration is now open, along with tickets for the popular Feast of Local Flavours.

“Bring Food Home 2015 is a great opportunity to celebrate leadership and learn from people working towards the development of a sustainable, resilient and healthy food system, here in Northeastern Ontario, as well as throughout the province of Ontario, and across Canada,” says Bridget King, Public Health Nutritionist with Sudbury & District Health Unit.

Bring Food Home 2015 will bring together over 400 food system leaders who are cultivating the seeds of healthy and sustainable food systems to share successes, gain skills, and collaborate on the future of Ontario’s food movement. The dynamic 3-day program includes over 40 sessions organized into 6 streams: Food Access and Justice, Agriculture and Environment, Local Food Economies, Edible Education, Health Promotion and Building Our Capacity. Register soon to book trade show and networking spaces, and to attend informative panels, hands-on workshops, community tours, inspiring presentations, and action planning sessions.

Highlights of the 2015 program include:

  • Mark Schatzker, award-winning writer and author of The Dorito Effect (2015) and Steak (2011), who will deliver the keynote address on the Friday evening. His latest book puts flavour at the heart of the conversation on public health and diet-related epidemics. The Dorito Effect focuses on how our cravings for natural flavours have been replaced by manufactured ones, and how this change has engineered a preference for nutritionally empty foods. Schatzker argues that by refocusing on natural flavours, our relationship between flavour and nutrition can be rebuilt.
  • The Feast of Local Flavours, featuring 10 of the Greater Sudbury Area’s most exciting chefs and producers dedicated to healthy, sustainable foods and beverages. The feast will take place at the College Boreal, Ontario’s only Francophone chef training school, on Saturday, November 21st at 6:30pm. Tickets will be on sale with registration and will go quickly! This event is open to the public.
  • Three conference-wide plenary sessions featuring expert panelists from across Ontario and beyond:
    • “Generation Ag: Mobilizing New Farmers to Advocate for the Future of Agriculture” (Friday)
    • “A Look at Land from Three Perspectives” (Saturday)
    • “Silo Breakdown: An Inter-Ministerial Dialogue on the Progress of Food and Farming Policy” (Sunday)
  • Two special Northern Farmer training program streams sponsored by FarmStart on Friday including workshops on soil, irrigation, and packing house design.
  • Four tours highlighting unique examples of northern food system projects and businesses in the Greater Sudbury Area and beyond on Friday.
