Position Overview

Sustain Ontario, a project of Tides Canada Initiatives, is a province-wide, cross-sectoral alliance that promotes healthy food and farming. Our mission is to provide coordinated support for the development of food systems throughout the province that are healthy, equitable, ecological and financially viable through collaborative action. We envision food systems throughout Ontario that are healthy, ecological, equitable and financially viable.

We have been approved for Canada Summer Jobs funding for a Municipal Food Policy Event and Policy Coordinator and are seeking a highly motivated, organized, analytical and dynamic summer student, preferably in a graduate level program, to work with us starting as early as June 1st, 2015. As per CSJ Guidelines, interested applicants must be under 30 years old and returning to school in the fall.

Anticipated Start Date: Late May/Early June for 12 Weeks

Salary: 33 hours per week at $15/hour. We are willing to negotiate hours and wage for the right candidate.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Support the planning and implementation of two municipal food policy and local food events
  • Conduct outreach and interviews with municipal food policy and local food advocates
  • Research innovative local food ideas and activities to inform the development of municipal food policy resources
  • Assist in the research and development of municipal and local food policy resources
  • Communicate about events, initiatives and research through the Sustain Ontario website and social media

 

Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be in a graduate level program in one of the following areas: food and nutritional sciences, urban or rural planning, public administration, geography or environmental studies, communications and marketing and/or another related field
  • Possess strong research and analytical skills
  • Be highly motivated, passionate about food systems policy and able to work both independently and in a team
  • Have strong written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess experience in social media, wordpress, video development and creation and/or some graphic design skills
  • Have an awareness of municipal politics and departmental systems
  • Possess some knowledge of evaluation theory and/or survey analysis
  • Marketing and event planning an asset
  • Ability to write in French an asset
