Perfect growing seasons in California, Florida, and Mexico have pushed the price of Canadian tomatoes down by 40 per cent, says the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers. Lower prices are threatening profitability for Canadian tomato exporters, especially in Leamington, ON, which is considered the tomato capital of Canada.
Further, the U.S. Commerce Department may rethink the 16-year old trade agreement with Mexico, which sets a minimum price on tomatoes imported into the U.S. from Mexico.
